FEATURE, PERU, 2012, DIR. ADRIÁN SABA, 95 MIN, SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES
A mysterious and deadly epidemic has gripped an apocalyptic Lima. Eusebio, apathetic and isolated, spends his days cleaning up the bloody detritus left behind by the dying. Desensitised by the death surrounding him, he moves through the devastated city without anguish. It is only when he happens upon a young boy hiding out in an abandoned apartment that Eusebio is drawn out of his reverie. Realising the boy, Joaquin, has nowhere to go, Eusebio takes him into his home.
In an attempt to engage with the boy, Eusebio makes eyeholes in a cardboard box and convinces a frightened Joaquin that if he wears it on his head it will protect him. A tentative trust and sense of caring gradually builds between the two as the Cleaner unexpectedly becomes responsible for life in the midst of death.
