Cuba 1988. The Castro regime has established “Los Cocos”, a sanatorium in Havana’s suburbs where HIV patients are confined under military watch and assigned a “companion”. A boxing champion involved in a doping scandal must earn his redemption by serving as companion to Daniel, one of Los Cocos’ most defiant patients. A strained relationship between these fallen heroes gradually materialises into one of solidarity and friendship.

Full-length Panellists’ Bios:
Dr. Rodrigo Acuña is an Associate Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies at the Department of International Studies at Macquarie University. His research interests include Inter-American relations, Cold War and Post Cold War Latin America, Venezuelan history and politics, and human rights and development policies from a multidisciplinary perspective. His extensive views are often sought by the Australian media on developments in the region, and his website can be viewed at http://rodrigoacuna.com/.
Dr. Vek Lewis is a Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies at Sydney University. His areas of interest include: internal and international migration in Mexico and Australia, sexual diversity politics, institutional ethnography, and critical legal and race studies and bioethics. He is author of the book Crossing Sex and Gender in Latin America (New York: Palgrave, 2010), and has published in journals ranging from Sexualities (UK) to PORTAL Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies.
Louis Vincent Di Paolo is a PhD candidate and tutor in the Department of International Studies at Macquarie University. His doctoral research is an ethnographic exploration into the lives of LGBTQI individuals, communities and activists in Uruguay. He has completed his Masters of Research focusing on the literary representations of South American migrants in Sydney. His research interests include queer theory, and queer anthropology in Latin America.
