Aldo, a swimming teacher, and Monica, a rum factory worker, live in the town of Melaza (Molasses), named for the sugarcane mill which was once the industrial backbone of the village. But the supply of sugar cane is exhausted and the community has fallen on tough times – there’s not much to do but wait, wait for something to happen.
Aldo and Monica live in a cramped cottage with their overweight daughter and grumpy grandmother. Despite the close quarters and the hardships facing them, they remain deeply in love. They try desperately to make ends meet but their attempts have landed them in serious troubles. Will their faith in love see them through?
This sensitive, restrained love story is speckled with humour; its captivating scenery offers us a rare glimpse of rural Cuba.
